As I am joined by Mike Hammond, the founder of Signal Relief, entrepreneur and advocate who knows all too well about pain. Mike was a boxer for several years. So he put his body through a lot of stress and uh physical pain. So he can definitely talk about how pain can affect all aspects of your life. Yeah, well, why don't you start off by telling everybody a little bit about yourself?

Um, yeah, my name's Mike, and uh, like you said, I've I've been doing businesses now for gosh, I don't think I've ever worked for anyone in my entire career since I graduated college. So um I've had 13 businesses, and uh a lot of them have gotten really big. Um we've had four exits, and so business has been my life for the last uh I mean 25 years really. Um, I mean, for me personally, I was uh so I've like I said, I've always had multiple businesses a long time ago when I was 31. I'm 49 now, but when I was 31, I was I had a couple CrossFit gyms with my brother Jeremy, and um we were hitting CrossFit hard at the time, and uh I was doing those power snatches and popped my disc out in the lower back, and uh that I re-injured it probably two or three times with the same type stuff, and it got to the point where it just always hurt. Um, they wanted me to go in for surgery, but I was nervous, didn't want to do it. But at the same time, because it hurts, you stop using everything, so I would stop lifting, I'd stop you keep picking heavy things up, right? For years, and so then you have problems with like your back starts to disintegrate, like you lose your muscle fibers in the back, and things just get worse. It's a downhill spiral. And uh I know pain pain meds, I mean, I was on them, right? Trying to deal with it, and uh um I'll just tell you the the when I when I invented when we first created this patch and I stuck it on my back, it was a game changer for me because for the first time in years my back didn't hurt, and uh for the first time in years I wanted to work out again and I wanted to spend time with my family outdoors, and I wanted to get on a horse, and those were all things that I had uh stopped doing just because it hurt too much to do it, right? All you think about is you all day long. You stop living, you stop doing things because it hurts, right? And uh, and so in a lot of times what I've noticed is people lose their identity, um, they just become couch-ridden and bedridden. Um, usually it's associated with weight gain because you're not moving, and so it just really affects us. And what's what really actually blew my mind, I I remember when I gave one of these to my friend from high school, he he actually had lost his leg when we were in our 20s. It got sucked into a stump grinder, and I put one of these patches on his prosthetic right above his knee, and um in a minute he had tears on both eyes. And it I was like, Matt, are you okay? And he was like, It doesn't hurt. It was the first time in 16 years he didn't hurt. What was interesting to me is when I turned around, because his wife and his two ninth at the time it was nine ninth grade twins were there, they were all crying too. Um, and actually, they were seventh graders at the time, but they were all crying, and this is within 60 seconds. Well, let's talk about the moment that that you understood that there had to be another approach to pain relief uh more than just reaching for medication.

SPEAKER_01 20:38

Well, for me, it actually was uh well, it's really interesting how you get to that point. But I had a brother who was an addict. Um he got so sucked into stuff actually that there was a point when um he thought he was someone he wasn't, and he was in an insane asylum, and we'd uh we actually had to get him into a rehab, and I went through that whole process with him. But because of that, I've been so anti-opioids because that's what he was addicted to, and uh and so I've always been like there's gotta be a better way than this, like that stuff just destroys lives. I watched it destroy his life, and I mean, luckily he came back from it, and uh, but a lot of people don't, right? And uh, and so when I figured out, like I was investing in military tech when we when we invented the patch, actually. I think business, it's funny, people are always like, uh well, you learn we're we're taught in college, right? That two out of ten businesses make it, eight are gonna fail. Well, I haven't had any fail. All mine has succeeded, right? I've had 13 for 13, so those stats make zero sense. I'm not even one of the billionaires like the Musk, right? Like, I'm not even one of those guys. So, how does that make any sense? And the problem is like most of my successful friends have multiple businesses also that all succeeded. So, what's the truth? And the truth is two out of 10 business owners have what it takes to be entrepreneurs, it's not the business as much as it is the guy behind the business, and um, so then the question is what is it that makes those guys successful? And I believe it's it's eternal optimism and faith. I think how many of us have actually been watching TV and you're you see something, you're like, hey, that's my idea. I thought of that five years ago. But then we're like afraid to actually move forward and take steps. So the reason we really didn't do it ourselves is we were afraid. And we're really only stuck with two things fear or faith. And to be successful in business, I think it takes a lot of faith. You have to take a step into the the unknown and you have to keep going full speed ahead, knowing that you can make it happen, even though you don't see a clear path all the time to get there. And so um I think business in a lot of ways, it takes faith to actually build a product and get it out there and make it happen. You gotta have faith and you gotta believe in yourself and you gotta be willing to take risks. And I think far too often all of us have a lot of the same skill sets, but a lot of people are held back simply because fear rules their life, they're afraid of loss. Well, what if I lose my car? What would happen to my house? And that fear just is like paralyzing. So then we just become a groundhog. We start doing something we don't even want to do every single day because it's the safe route, right? And I think uh, I mean, Jesus taught us, right, that um we can do all things are possible to him that believeth. And I think that uh we need to have a lot more people choosing to believe and take action and stop being afraid to go after your passions and the things that you really want to do. I think too many people settle for a life that they don't want necessarily because it's too scary to actually go do what they really want to do. I love seeing someone graduate law school at like 60 because they finally went and did what they wanted to do their whole life, right? And so I think that's a lesson for all of us. Um if you have something you're thinking about, but you're afraid, like figure out how to go after it and go do it. And that's something that I've kind of lived my life by. Um is I've never been afraid and I always go after something full speed, and everything always goes wrong, like everything always goes wrong, but that's okay.

You just keep moving forward and you always figure out a way to get through it, and so um yeah, I don't know if that answers your question, but it absolutely does, and keeping along those lines, you know, you've experienced a lot of entrepreneurial success. So but but but you always say success doesn't prepare you for life, life's biggest challenges. So, what has life taught you that business never could?

Life has taught me that the most important thing in your life and the one thing you should cherish is your family. The least important thing in your life is actually possessions and things. It's temporary happiness with no lasting stay. But the things that truly matter is your family. I remember I was reading a business book once, and he talked about, man, if you are finding yourself afraid to take big risks, um, what you should do is imagine your life. Like take the thing you're afraid of, and imagine your life with that thing happening, and imagine how bad it really would even be. And I remember asking like imagining that I was taking this huge risk and I was gonna go bankrupt, and I lost my house, and I lost everything that I'd worked for the last 25 years, but I still had my family, and I was like, I could be in an apartment with my family and I would be totally fine. Like, actually, none of this stuff even matters. It's so funny because when I really thought about it, I was like, why am I so afraid? Who cares if I go bankrupt and have to start over? At least I've got my family, and that's what I've learned through life is that the most important thing in your life is your family, and it's those people that you care and love and and spend time with. And uh, I think too many times we neglect that, and we neglect the most important thing because we're chasing dollar signs, and that's a sad thing.

Well, tell us about any upcoming projects that you're working on that listeners need to be aware of.

Dude, I've got some really cool stuff. We have signal actually doesn't just work on humans, it works on animals. In fact, uh, we actually, when we released our Jovi Patch, which is a one for women's that we make we make for women. Um, this girl sends us back a video on Instagram and she goes, Did you know this does work on a dog? And she had this dog that couldn't walk up the stairs because of arthritis, and then she had taken the Jovi patch and bandaged it around it, and it was running up and down the stairs. We were like, No way. How did we not think of that? And so we have some really cool products coming out for pets that we're way excited about. I mean, can you imagine a pet bed where your a dog or an animal that's older could lay down at night and literally have all their discomfort disappear? Like, so cool! And so that's coming out, and then we have a battery company that I've that I'm a shareholder of, and we're actually coming out with some in-home storage batteries that are really, really cool. I'm excited about with Grand Teton Energy. Um, we have a battery coming out that where you can basically supercharge your car in your garage in 45 minutes, which is awesome. And so um, just dude, always fun stuff. I'm always looking for the next cool thing and grabbing the partners we need to pull it off and rolling, and we've got we've got some fun stuff coming.
